Nurukan – A Gentle and Traditional Way to Warm Sake
Nurukan refers to sake that is gently warmed to around 40°C (104°F). Unlike hot sake served at izakayas, nurukan keeps the aroma and delicate taste intact while making the drink feel softer and more comforting. It is a traditional way to enjoy junmai or honjozo sake, especially in winter or with warm meals.
You don’t need any special tools – just place your sake flask in warm water for a few minutes until it feels warm to the touch.
🍶 Quick Tips:
- Ideal temperature: around 40°C
- Best served in a ceramic ochoko (cup) for a cozy feel
- Great with grilled fish, miso dishes, or tofu
🌟 Fun Fact:
Historically, nurukan was the preferred style of warming sake for samurai and scholars. It was believed to bring out the “true character” of the sake without overwhelming the senses.
